چکیده

Based on CORSIKA and REAS2 simulations, we investigate the sensitivity of geosynchrotron radio emission from extensive air showers to the primary cosmic ray energy and mass. It is found that at a characteristic lateral distance, the amplitude of the bandpass-filtered radio signal is directly proportional to the energy deposited in the atmosphere by the electromagnetic cascade, with an RMS uncertainty due to shower-to-shower fluctuations of less than 3%. In addition, the ratio of this radio amplitude and that at a larger lateral distance is directly related to the atmospheric depth of the air shower maximum, with an RMS uncertainty of ∼ 15–20 g cm . Through the measurement of these quantities, geosynchrotron radio emission from cosmic ray air showers could thus be used to infer the primary particle energy and mass on a shower-to-shower basis.

Detecting Radio Emission from Cosmic Ray Air Showers and Neutrinos with a Digital Radio Telescope

We discuss the possibilities of measuring ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos with radio techniques. We review a few of the properties of radio emission from cosmic ray air showers and show how these properties can be explained by coherent “geosynchrotron” emission from electron-positron pairs in the shower as they move through the geomagnetic field. This should allow one to use the rad...

Simulations of Radio Emission from Cosmic Ray Air Showers

Radio emission from cosmic ray air showers has the potential to become an additional, cost-effective observing technique for cosmic ray research, being largely complementary to the well-established particle detector and air fluorescence techniques. We present Monte Carlo simulatios of radio emission from extensive air showers in the scheme of coherent geosynchrotron radiation from electron-posi...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Radio Detection of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

The radio technique for the detection of cosmic particles has seen a major revival in recent years. New and planned experiments in the lab and the field, such as GLUE, Anita, LUNASKA, Codalema, LOPES as well as sophisticated Monte Carlo experiments have produced a wealth of new information and I review here briefly some of the main results with the main focus on air showers. Radio emission of u...

Monte Carlo Simulations of Radio Emission from Cosmic Ray Air Showers

As a basis for the interpretation of data gathered by LOPES and other experiments, we have carried out Monte Carlo simulations of geosynchrotron radio emission from cosmic ray air showers. The simulations, having been verified carefully with analytical calculations, reveal a wealth of information on the characteristics of the radio signal and their dependence on specific air shower parameters. ...
